Tom Baril is a contemporary American photographer his Polaroid and wet-collodion prints of flowers, landscapes, and buildings. Born in Putnam, CT in 1952, he received his BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in 1980. In his last year at school, Baril began printing for the famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, where he learned a number of important techniques. Though he has distanced himself from Mapplethorpe’s style, Baril continues to print for the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. The artist continues to live and work in New York, NY. Today, his photographs are held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, among others.
