Artist

Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann (1906–1999) was a German-born American photographer celebrated for his pioneering work in fashion photography. He studied art in Hamburg during the 1920s and later in Paris under the architect and designer Le Corbusier. His first fashion photograph appeared in French Vogue in 1931, followed by a solo exhibition at La Plume d’Or in Paris in 1932, which was favorably reviewed by The New Yorker and established his career in photography.

In 1937, Horst moved to New York, beginning a decades-long collaboration with Coco Chanel. In 1941, under the name Horst P. Horst, he became an American citizen and joined the U.S. Army as a military photographer. Known for his elegant and meticulously composed images, Horst captured celebrities, socialites, and cultural figures, blending classical composition with modern style.

Over his career, he received numerous honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1989 and the Master of Photography Award from the International Center for Photography in 1996. Horst P. Horst passed away in Palm Beach, Florida, on November 18, 1999, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of fashion and portrait photography.
