Antoine Poncet (1928-2022) was a celebrated French-Swiss abstract sculptor whose refined biomorphic works place him within the important European tradition established by Jean Arp and Constantin Brancusi. Poncet's mature practice drew many of its forms from nature, paring each subject down to reveal the beauty or voluptuousness of a fundamental shape or the essence of a movement. His sculptures show unmistakable affinities with the work of Jean Arp, with whom Poncet worked closely from 1953 to 1955, a formative collaboration that shaped the direction of his artistic life.

Born in Paris to the Swiss painter Marcel Poncet and to a mother whose family included the important Swiss art dealer and gallery figure Marie-Louise Poncet, Antoine grew up within a cultivated European artistic environment. This upbringing gave him direct access to the community of modernist artists working in France and Switzerland during the postwar era, and his family connections opened doors that would lead to his important early apprenticeship with Arp.

Poncet believed that movement was essential to good sculpture, and he strove throughout his career for a kind of breathless balance in his work, arranging his forms so that a viewer looking at each piece would feel that a gentle push might set the sculpture into motion or send it toppling. This attention to precariously balanced form gives his sculptures their particular life, and it distinguishes his work from the more static compositions of many of his contemporaries. Working in polished bronze, marble, and other traditional sculptural materials, Poncet produced pictures whose smoothly modeled surfaces catch and hold the light in ways that reinforce the sense of animate presence.
