Artist

John Marin (1870–1953) was an American modernist painter and printmaker celebrated for his expressive landscapes and pioneering work in watercolor. Born in Rutherford, New Jersey, Marin trained briefly at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before traveling to Europe, where he was exposed to the works of the French Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and modernist painters. These influences, combined with his keen observation of nature, informed his distinctive style.

Marin drew inspiration from both the urban energy of New York City and the rugged coastline of Maine, capturing the dynamic interplay of light, atmosphere, and movement in his compositions. His watercolors and prints are characterized by sweeping, gestural brushstrokes, a bold sense of rhythm, and an innovative approach to form and space. While rooted in the traditions of American Impressionism, Marin’s work pushed toward abstraction, reflecting his interest in modernist principles.

A close associate of the influential photographer Alfred Stieglitz, Marin exhibited extensively at Stieglitz’s 291 Gallery, and his work played a crucial role in shaping the modernist movement in the United States. Over his career, Marin became a leading figure in American watercolor painting, influencing generations of artists with his fluid technique, inventive compositions, and the vibrancy he brought to both natural and urban landscapes.
