Richard Erdman (b. 1952) is an American sculptor renowned for his monumental works in marble and bronze, celebrated for their dynamic interplay of curves, contrasts, and a profound dialogue with both geologic and human timescales. After graduating, Erdman traveled to Carrara, Italy, the world’s finest source of marble, where he discovered, in his words, “worlds of possibility and wonder in the sublime beauty of ancient stone.” An early apprenticeship with master stone carvers in Carrara led to a 35-year collaboration with the family-run studio SGF Scultura, which continues to this day.

In 1983, Erdman was commissioned to create a landmark travertine sculpture for the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens at PepsiCo in Purchase, New York. His work Passage, carved from a single 350-ton block of stone, stands among pieces by 20th-century masters including Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson, Isamu Noguchi, and Claes Oldenburg.

Erdman’s sculptures are recognized internationally for their evocative forms and sense of transcendence. His works are included in over 140 museum, public, and private collections across six continents and have been featured in more than 160 solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Notable collections include the United Nations, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Princeton University, The Rockefeller Collection, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens. Through his meticulous craft and innovative vision, Erdman has established himself as a leading figure in contemporary sculptural practice.
