Artist

Arthur Okamura (1932–2009) was a Japanese American artist celebrated for his abstract expressionist paintings and screen prints. Born in California, he developed his artistic foundation at the Art Institute of Chicago, and later attended seminars at Yale University and the University of Chicago.

Rising to prominence in the 1960s, Okamura became known as a book illustrator and an active member of the artist community in Bolinas, California. Throughout his career, he explored a range of styles, demonstrating a remarkable ability to transform simple ideas—such as the movement of a wave—into compositions of heightened emotional and visual impact.

In addition to his studio practice, Okamura taught art for many years, influencing generations of students while maintaining a robust exhibition record. His work remains a testament to the expressive potential of abstraction and his dedication to exploring form, color, and narrative in a deeply personal and evocative way.
