Artist

Beverly Pepper (1922–2020) was an American sculptor whose work reshaped modern and contemporary sculpture through monumental forms and innovative materials. Born in New York City, she began her artistic career as a painter before turning to sculpture in the 1950s, studying and eventually settling in Italy.

Pepper is best known for her large-scale outdoor works, often made of steel, corten, and other industrial materials. These sculptures engage directly with their surroundings, creating a dialogue between form, environment, and viewer. Her pieces balance weight and tension, combining a commanding physical presence with lyrical elegance.

Throughout her career, she explored the intersection of sculpture, architecture, and space, emphasizing human perception and the relationship between art and landscape. In addition to monumental works, she produced smaller, intricate pieces that reveal her meticulous attention to materiality and detail.

Her work has been exhibited internationally and is included in major public and private collections. Celebrated as a pioneering figure in contemporary sculpture, Beverly Pepper expanded the possibilities of the medium while maintaining a profoundly human sensibility, continually exploring permanence, impermanence, and the poetic potential of form in space.
