Adam Lehr (1853-1924) was a Cleveland-born painter known for his still-life and landscape compositions. He began his artistic training as a house and sign painter, but soon pursued more formal instruction under Archibald Willard, the family friend and celebrated painter of The Spirit of ’76.
In 1880, with financial support from a local merchant, Lehr moved to New York to study at the Art Students League for a year. Returning to Cleveland in 1881, he began exhibiting regularly at the Brush and Palette Club, the Watercolor Society, and the Cleveland Society of Artists. Lehr was a founding member of the Cleveland Art Club, a collective of prominent local artists, many of whom taught at the Cleveland Academy of Art.
Though primarily recognized for his landscapes and still-life paintings, Lehr supplemented his income with commercial work throughout his career. His compositions are noted for their careful attention to color, light, and detail, capturing both the natural beauty of the Ohio landscape and the quiet elegance of everyday objects.
