Sarah Gillespie (b. 1963) is a contemporary British painter based in Devon, England, celebrated for her deeply contemplative and poetic landscapes. She works seasonally, producing small, detailed oil sketches outdoors during the summer months, which serve as studies for her large-scale studio canvases and charcoal works completed in the winter. Trained in classical techniques at the Atelier Neo-Medici in Paris, Gillespie absorbed the methods of 16th- and 17th-century painters, which inform her careful manipulation of light, color, and composition.

Her paintings reflect a profound attentiveness to the natural world, capturing both its transient fragility and enduring presence. Gillespie’s works reveal a keen sensitivity to atmosphere, mood, and the subtle interplay of elements within a landscape. She draws inspiration from Romantic poets—Keats, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Kathleen Raine, and Mary Oliver—imbuing her work with an awareness of the spiritual, symbolic, and poetic qualities inherent in nature. Themes of seasonal change, cyclical patterns, and ecological interconnectedness are woven into her compositions, creating a sense of place that is both historically resonant and emotionally engaging. Through her meditative approach, Gillespie transforms ordinary landscapes into quiet celebrations of observation, memory, and the enduring beauty of the natural world.
