Artist

Michael Forster (1907–2002) was born in India, educated in England, and later became a Canadian citizen, giving him an international artistic foundation that defies easy categorization. Throughout his career, the supremacy of color was paramount; he subtly blended layers of paint into refined compositions that are rich with luminous passages and textured surfaces. Even in smaller works, Forster’s dexterous handling of paint and the vibrancy of his palette make his art exceptional. His varied and abstracted pictures distinguish him among his contemporaries and demonstrate a unique vision that spans cultural and geographic boundaries.

Active in Canada for more than forty-five years, Forster contributed significantly to the country’s cultural history. By the 1930s he was a frequent exhibitor with major art societies, and by the 1940s several of his paintings were already part of Canada’s major museum collections, cementing his enduring legacy in contemporary art. His work consistently reflects a refined balance between abstraction and lyricism, often evoking natural phenomena and landscapes without depicting them literally. Forster’s compositions reveal a deep sensitivity to light, space, and rhythm, with subtle gestures and layered color harmonies creating a quiet emotional resonance. Today, his paintings continue to captivate collectors and scholars alike, celebrated for their meditative qualities, timeless elegance, and profound contribution to modern Canadian art.
