Artist

Seton Smith (b. 1955) is an American contemporary artist known for her evocative photographs that explore the intersection of architecture, landscape, and the built environment. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Smith received her BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York and later earned an MFA from the Yale School of Art. Her work reflects a thoughtful engagement with the ways urban space, memory, and perception shape human experience.

Working primarily in photography, Smith often focuses on fragments of cities, construction sites, interiors, and overlooked architectural details. Her images frequently blur the line between documentation and abstraction, using subtle shifts in light, framing, and perspective to transform ordinary structures into atmospheric and contemplative compositions. The resulting works often convey a sense of ambiguity and quiet tension, inviting viewers to reconsider familiar environments.

Smith’s photographs have been widely exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and internationally. Her work is included in numerous public collections and has been featured in exhibitions that explore contemporary photography and conceptual approaches to urban space. Through her careful observation of the built world, Smith continues to create images that reveal the poetic and psychological dimensions of everyday environments.
