John von Wicht (1888-1970) was a distinguished German-American painter whose long career carried him from classical training in Germany to a substantial place within the vibrant abstract art community of postwar New York. Born in Germany in 1888, von Wicht studied at the Private Art School of the Grand Duke of Hesse and at the Royal School for Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin, later apprenticing in a painting and decorative design shop. This unusually thorough European education combined academic instruction with practical decorative arts training, giving him a technical range that would prove essential throughout his American career.

Settling in New York in 1923, von Wicht worked initially for a lithography company before joining a firm making stained glass and mosaics. This work gave him substantial insight into the designs, structural forms, and technical methods that would later inform his mature abstract paintings, and it developed his lifelong sensitivity to the material possibilities of his medium. With sufficient connections and demonstrated skill, von Wicht soon opened his own studio in Brooklyn, along with an office in Manhattan to secure private commissions.

As a muralist during the 1930s, von Wicht worked in a range of styles from fully abstract to semi-abstract, sometimes drawing on Cubist-inspired vocabularies. He painted murals for WNYC radio and for the New York World's Fair, participating in the major public art projects of the era. He exhibited widely through the mid to late 1930s and, in 1941, mounted an important exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, cementing his reputation as a serious abstract painter within the American art community.

Von Wicht continued to exhibit frequently through the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, mounting numerous solo and group exhibitions in New York and nationally. He was invited to join both the American Abstract Artists and the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors, two of the most important professional organizations supporting abstract art in America during his lifetime. Von Wicht died of pneumonia on January 20, 1970. His paintings are held today in significant American museum and private collections, where they remain valued examples of transatlantic abstract painting from a formative period in American modernism.
