Overview

Sky Kim is a Korean-born artist based in the New York area, known for meticulously patterned watercolors built from the accumulation of thousands of small repeated marks. Born in Seoul, she received her MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and has since lived and worked in the metropolitan area, most recently in Jersey City.

Her early practice was in large-scale oil painting, worked with broad gestural brushwork in a vocabulary she describes as simultaneously biomorphic, organic, and abstract. She later abandoned that approach for the method that now defines her work: dense, labor-intensive patterning in water-based media, built up over long periods and governed by repetition rather than gesture. The shift from expansive mark to minute one is the central fact of her development.

The resulting compositions spiral, radiate, and multiply into forms that suggest cellular structure, mandalas, and vortices at once. Kim draws explicitly on the principles of sacred geometry, and describes her subject as the condition of being made of trillions of cells and gallons of water, existing in a constant state of movement rather than as a fixed solid. Recurring bodies of work carry titles such as the Portal series and Spiraling Strands of Human DNA, pointing toward both microscopic biology and cosmological scale.

She has shown in solo exhibitions including Sky Kim is Diving into the Micro-Universe at Tinney Contemporary, Nashville, in 2022, and Each One All at 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel in New York in 2019, and is represented internationally. Her awards include the National Korean Art Competition Awards, a Pratt Institute Art Grant, and a Jersey City Art Council Grant.
