Massimo Listri

Massimo Listri (b. 1956) is an Italian photographer whose luminous large-format images of historic libraries, palaces, museums, and grand architectural interiors have secured him an international reputation as one of the leading contemporary photographers of the built environment. Born in Florence, Listri grew up surrounded by the extraordinary architectural and cultural heritage of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, an environment that shaped his photographic sensibility from his earliest years and gave him lifelong access to the great tradition of Italian art and architecture.

Listri's mature practice is devoted to the photography of interior spaces at their most historically resonant. Working with a large-format view camera and available natural light, he produces images of extraordinary technical refinement, marked by precise perspectival control, exceptional tonal range, and a distinctive luminosity that seems to emerge from within the photographed spaces themselves. His characteristic subjects include the great libraries of Europe, from the Vatican and Wolfenbüttel to the Escorial and countless monastic and university collections, along with palace interiors, private and public art collections, and the historic rooms of institutions across the world.
