David Yarrow

David Yarrow (b. 1966) is a Scottish photographer whose dramatic images of wildlife, indigenous cultures, and staged narrative scenes have made him one of the most commercially successful fine art photographers working today. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Yarrow first came to public attention as a young sports photographer. At just twenty years old, he took the celebrated image of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup trophy after the 1986 tournament in Mexico, an early success that launched him into serious photographic practice.

After a career in finance, Yarrow returned to photography with a renewed focus on wildlife and the world's more remote places. His mature practice is defined by an unusually close, immersive approach to his subjects. Using remote-triggered cameras placed at ground level, often within touching distance of the animals he photographs, Yarrow produces images with a physical intensity and psychological presence rarely achieved in wildlife photography. His large-scale black and white prints of elephants, lions, polar bears, wolves, and other iconic wild subjects have become his most recognizable work, and they are typically produced in editions at monumental scale.

Alongside his wildlife images, Yarrow has documented indigenous peoples in some of the most challenging environments on earth, and he has more recently produced elaborate staged narrative photographs featuring celebrity subjects, actors, animals, and constructed scenes that draw on the visual language of cinema. These theatrical images have attracted a wide contemporary audience and helped establish him as one of the most commercially prominent living photographers.

Yarrow is deeply committed to wildlife conservation and serves as a global ambassador for WildAid, and a portion of the proceeds from his photography sales supports conservation efforts around the world. He is represented internationally by Maddox Gallery and other leading contemporary photography galleries, and his prints are held in significant private collections worldwide. He continues to work at an ambitious pace, extending his signature approach across new subjects and geographies.
