Joel Perlman (b. 1943) is an American sculptor recognized for his dynamic, abstract forms and mastery of welded metal. While pursuing his BFA at Cornell University, Perlman honed his welding skills through off-campus adult education classes, laying the technical foundation for his large-scale sculptural work. He later earned an MA from the University of California, Berkeley, further developing his conceptual and formal approach to sculpture.
Since 1973, Perlman has taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, influencing generations of emerging artists. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including major presentations at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Perlman’s public sculptures are installed in prominent locations across the United States, as well as internationally in London and at the Hara Open-Air Museum in Japan, demonstrating both his technical skill and his ability to engage viewers on a monumental scale.
