Beatriz Milhazes

Beatriz Milhazes (b. 1960) is one of the most internationally celebrated Brazilian contemporary artists, whose vibrant, chromatically saturated paintings and collages have secured her a distinctive place within global contemporary art. Her artistic practice is a vibrant tapestry woven from the rich cultural and natural landscapes of her native Rio de Janeiro. Renowned for her distinctive visual language, which spans painting, collage, and printmaking, Milhazes captures the essence of her surroundings with a chromatic and geometric vitality that is uniquely her own.

This synthesis of influences culminates in what Milhazes terms "chromatic free geometry." Her artworks are characterized by a dynamic interplay of color, form, and rhythm, where geometric shapes and organic motifs dance across the canvas in a riotous celebration of visual energy. Circles, floral forms, arabesques, lace-like patterns, and geometric ornaments layer over one another in compositions that draw on the deep Brazilian traditions of Baroque decoration, carnival imagery, and modernist abstraction. Milhazes emerged as a pivotal figure in the Geração 80, or 80s Generation, movement in Brazil, a group of artists whose return to painting after the conceptual experiments of the 1970s heralded a new era of artistic freedom and experimentation in Brazilian contemporary art. She studied at the celebrated Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, which trained many of the leading Brazilian artists of her generation. Her technique of transferring painted acrylic elements from plastic sheets onto canvas allowed her to develop a distinctive layered surface that combines the flatness of collage with the physical presence of painted color.

Milhazes has represented Brazil at the Venice Biennale and has been the subject of major museum exhibitions across the world, including retrospectives at the Fondation Cartier, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and other important international institutions. Her paintings are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern, the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio, and other leading museums, where they remain among the most joyfully affirming contributions to contemporary global art.
