Overview
Pieter Frederick van Os, a painter from the Northern Netherlands, hailed from a well-known family of artists who were amongst the most influential Dutch painters of the end of the 18th century. Like his father before him, the younger van Os specialized in painting animals, especially horses in all their different forms-work horses, draft horses, and racehorses. Through meticulous and painstaking copying of landscape paintings Pieter taught himself the art of landscapes. Van Os contributed to the continuation of the art of Dutch landscape painting through his own works executed in the 19th century and through the later works of his most prominent students, amongst them - Anton Mauve (1838-1888) and Johannes Hubertus Leonardus de Haas (1832-1908). The contributions of Pieter Frederik van Os to Dutch landscape painting and the continuance of the Dutch traditions of painting cannot be underestimated.
