Paul Resika

Paul Resika (b. 1928) is one of the most accomplished American painters of his generation, whose long career has produced a body of work that combines the great European painting tradition with a distinctly personal engagement with American landscape. Born in New York City, Resika began his artistic training at an unusually young age, studying under Sol Wilson while still a boy and holding his first solo exhibition in his teens. This precocious start placed him within the New York art community during the extraordinary years surrounding the emergence of Abstract Expressionism.

Resika's most formative early training came through his studies with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, where he absorbed the celebrated master's principles of color and structural composition. Hofmann's push-pull theory, together with his emphasis on the fundamental spatial dynamism of pictorial form, would remain foundational to Resika's practice for the rest of his life. Alongside Hofmann's influence, Resika made the decisive personal choice in 1950 to spend four years in Italy, where he devoted himself to sustained study of the great tradition of European painting from the Venetian Renaissance through the modern era. His time in Rome and Venice gave him direct engagement with Titian, Veronese, Corot, Cézanne, and other painters who would inform his mature vision.

Resika returned to the United States with an unusually cultivated sense of the deep traditions of Western painting, and his mature practice has occupied a distinctive position within American art ever since. Working in landscape, still life, and figure subjects, he combines the atmospheric color of the Venetian tradition and the structural discipline of Cézanne with the direct observation of the American landscapes he has come to know most intimately. His Provincetown paintings, in particular, capture the harbor light, wharves, boats, and coastal architecture of the Cape Cod town where he has spent his summers for decades.

Resika has been elected to both the National Academy of Design and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and he has been represented by Alexandre Gallery and Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in New York. His paintings are held in the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney, and other major American collections. He continues to work with sustained energy from his New York and Cape Cod studios, extending a practice that has now spanned more than seventy years.
